Yoga for Scoliosis & Asymmetry – Workshop with Deborah Wolk

Yoga for Scoliosis & Asymmetry: Using Breath to Stabilize Standing Poses and Twists (Hybrid Workshop)

3 Sessions on Saturday & Sunday, June 15th & 16th with Deborah Wolk

In the asymmetric body, our individual patterns restrict movement in one area and allow too much movement in another. That is why many of us experience simultaneous feelings of restriction and hypermobility. The breath is the key to finding the internal sensation to awaken the areas of restricted movement and specify a region of the body needing stabilization.

When the spine twists, the breath can help us reach movement potential in the restricted and numb sides of the thoracic and lumbar. It can also help us develop awareness of the stability needed in the opposite side of the trunk as well as the neck, shoulders and pelvis. For the first part of this workshop, Deborah will work with the smaller twisted actions in standing poses finding the correct actions by practicing both upright and supine.

The workshop will then focus on the standing twists such as parivrtta trikonasana and parivrtta parsvakonasana.

The final portion of the workshop will address issues of the asymmetric body in approaching seated twists.

Deborah Wolk, founder and program director of Samamkaya Yoga Back Care & Scoliosis Collective in NYC, will help you find the best location for your breath and the actions needed for more stability to help you find your potential in these foundational (and sometimes frustrating!) asanas. With these skills your asana practice can better relieve muscle and joint pain, help you find your center of gravity and feel more balance in the body.

6 months yogasana practice is suggested. Students with spinal fusions are encouraged to join as the twists can be approached with the breath without any spinal rotation.

The workshop will build on previous sessions, so although students are welcome to sign up for any session it would be best to take them all in sequence.
